The quiet joy of adventure games with no fighting

Not every adventure needs a health bar. Some of the most memorable mobile games I've played this year didn't have a single fight in them.

The Hollow Atlas is the clearest example. You map a shifting island, solve environmental puzzles, and piece together what happened to whoever was here before. It respects you enough to not explain everything.

Games like this live or die on atmosphere. Sound design does a lot of heavy lifting — the way a room echoes, the ambient hum, the silence right before something clicks into place. Good headphones genuinely change the experience.

My tip for puzzle-heavy adventures: keep a notes app open. Half the puzzles in these games are about connecting a detail you saw twenty minutes ago to something in front of you now. Your memory will let you down; a screenshot won't.

When a no-combat adventure lands, it stays with you longer than most action games. There's something about solving instead of smashing.
